Mozart Couto is a professional illustrator who uses Gimp and Linux.

Mr. Couto has tested several digitizing tablets with Dreamlinux-5, such as: Genius Mouse Pen i608, Intuos4, Genius Mouse Pen 6x8, Trust TB7300 and Kanvus Light 64.

His testimony:

"The system (Dreamlinux-5) is very stable (I've already made two updates via synaptic) and it proved to be very easy to use!
I'm not sure how to explain it but I feel XFCE runs differently in DL. It's much safer and powerfull and yet it's light! I've been working with DL exclusively on a pendrive installation! It's totally safe and secure.
To someone used to the Ubuntu family of distros, DL seems to be somewhat closed at first, however it's amazing to use, that's for sure."

Plank: Change themes

Plank: Change themes

Although with Dreamlinux also a nice theme for Plank is included, there are also other themes available as can be seen on WebUPD8.
Installation is very simple. Download the .zip file with the theme of your liking. Extract the .zip file and place the two .theme files in the ~/.config/plank/theme directory. Once the files are replaced the new theme should take effect immediately.

NOTE: Personally I first "archived" the original .theme files into a .zip file so I can always resort back to the original theme.

Install and compile Nvidia driver

Install and compile Nvidia proprietary driver.

Install Debian Kernel in Dreamlinux 5:

sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686-pae linux-headers-2.6-686-pae

This will install 3.x kernel from debian repositories.

Next, type in terminal: sudo ln -sf /usr/src/linux-headers-3.1.0-1-686-pae /usr/src/linux

Download Nvidia driver for your Nvidia Card: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

In your Downloads folder, modify permissions to Nvidia driver, typing in terminal:

sudo chmod 755 NVIDIA-Linux*.run

Next type: sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop

The previous command kills graphics mode and brings a black screen. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1, then type your username and password.

Go to the Downloads directory in your home (cd ~/Downloads) where your Nvidia driver file lies and type: sudo ./NVIDIA*.run

Accept the license terms and the driver compilation starts. Then the following message will appear:
"Would you like nvidia-installer to attempt to create this modprobe file for you? ". Answer YES.

This will make the current nouveau driver not to be loaded in the next boot, avoiding conflicts. Restart the computer.

The system will restart using a generic driver, in a low resolution. After login to the XFCE desktop, go back to terminal and kill Lightdm process issuing: sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop

Again you'll meet the black screen. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1, login and go to Downloads (cd ~/Downloads). Then type sudo ./NVIDIA*.run

This time the compilation process will proceed up to its end. When it finishes the following message will appear:

"Would you like to run the nvidia-xconfig utility to automatically update your X configuration file so that the NVIDIA X driver will be used when you restart X ?"

Answer YES and restart the computer.

Next time the graphical environment will start in the correct resolution. If you'd like to check if the system is really running the proprietary Nvidia driver click on System>System Profiler and Benchmark, then choose Display.

And if you'd like to check how fast is your video card, type in a terminal: glxgears -info

See the next picture. It shows the performance of a GeForce 9500 videocard.

Thunar Actions

Dreamlinux comes with some pre-configured Thunar actions.
It's possible to expand those actions, increasing the system capabilities.

Some of the following examples allows, for instance, to improve running multimedia files.
Suppose you wish your computer's audio be redirected to its digital output, when you're using the Thunar action "Watch this video":

On Thunar menu look for Edit>Configure custom actions.
Choose "Watch this Video" and then press Edit button (the one with a pencil icon).
Find this line: mplayer %F
Change it to: mplayer -ao alsa:device=iec958 %F

This way the sound will be redirected to SPIDIF output.

Now, suppose you wanna an action to play a video file with DTS sound, redirecting it to the digital output. Do this way:

mplayer -ao alsa:device=iec958 -ac hwdts %F

You can create an mplayer command line designed to play your videos the way it suits you better. Check mplayer manual by typing man mplayer in a terminal.

Another action, named "Convert to Avi", converts flv, mov or mp4 video files to avi (xvid). This action was pre-configured to create videos in standard size. If you wish the converted video to remain with its original video resolution, open the action and modify this line:

xterm -bg white -fg black -geometry 80x10 -e ffmpeg -i %f -f avi -vf scale=-1:360 -vcodec libxvid -maxrate 1000k -b 700k -qmin 3 -qmax 5 -bufsize 1200000 -g 300 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 192k %f.avi

to:

In this example you're stripping off the command "scale=-1:360" and the resulting video remains with its original resolution.

Obviously you can alter the other values as well. Check FFMPEG manual by typing man ffmpeg on terminal.

Installing Wine in Dreamlinux 5

Installing Wine in Dreamlinux 5

First, open terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install libhal1 libmpg123-0 libopenal1 libopenal-data

Then download and install the wanted wine-packages from
http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/

The i386 packages listing is the one we want.

Tried it myself with:

I opted out on that and settled for the one provided by Debian.

Hint: the dbg and dev packages are not needed for normal funcionality - no need to download them.

Firstof all, this tutorial is based on the Debian derivative distributionDreamlinux 5.

Toclosely follow this tutorial, though, you should temporarily move thefile /home/<username>/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menuelsewhere. The same applies to the directory/home/<username>/.local/share/applications. At the end you canmove back those file and directory to their original places.

XFCEmenu follows freedesktop.org specifications, as most major Desktopenvironments like Gnome and KDE do.

XFCE’smenu is devided in sections and its organization is kept in an XMLfile named

xfce-applications.menu, residing primarily in/etc/xdg/menus.

Theseare the main sections comprising an XFCE menu:

-Name section

-three self-contained elements: DefaultAppDirs, DefaultDirectoryDirsand DefaultMergeDirs.

Optional Include and Exclude sections.
Layout section.

-Menu section.

Beingan XML grammar, XFCE's menu starts by declaring its namespace in theform:

Everythingthat follows the namespace declaration is enclosed by the Menu tag,so XFCE’s menu root is:

Includingthe three self-contained elements, which describe (somewhere in thesystem) the default directory for applications(/usr/share/applications), default directory for groupingapplications in submenus (/usr/share/desktop-directories) and(I'm not 100% sure) I suspect a combination of /etc/xdg/menusand /home/<username>/.config/menus. So, our menu filedescription grows to this:

UsuallyDesktop environments like XFCE have their own categorizedapplications present at the menu's root. XFCE achieves this bycreating a particular category named X-Xfce-Toplevel. So,including this category just after the default self-containedelements and prior to the Layout section grows the menu to this:

Layoutis the tag element that organizes menu the way you like. So, XFCEdesigners organized the menu in XFCE Desktop this way:

Topmostelement in XFCE’s menu is Run program application, followed by aseparator line. Notice that there are two applications here,described in their respective .desktop files (freedesktop.orgspecifications): xfrun4.desktop and xfce4-run.desktop. If there werethese two files in /usr/share/applications, both applications wouldshow there at the top. As I aforementioned these are specific XFCEapplications, categorized by the value X-Xfce-Toplevel intheir Categories= class, in their respective .desktop filesresiding in /usr/share/applications. Since they are individualapplications, not grouped in any submenu, they must be referred to byusing the tag pair <Filename></Filename>.

Noticethat there are two different elements in the entire Layout:<Menuname></Menuname> and <Mergetype="all"/>. The first is surrounded by two<Separator/> elements and describes the first instanceof submenus in the menu (see figure 1).

Ifyou look at the picture with the pristine XFCE menu it will appearexactly the same way: Settings is surrounded by two separators linesand has a right arrow that spans into a submenu.

Andthe <Merge type="all"/> element is responsibleto merge all other elements in the menu, no matter if individualfiles or files grouped by a submenu. That's why you have all thosesubmenus Accessories, Development, Graphics, Internet, Multimedia,Office, Other and System, plus About This System, which is a regularDreamlinux specific application, present in /usr/share/applications.Since it's categorized as a X-Xfce-Toplevel application (althoughit’s a Dreamlinux specific one), and not included in the Layoutsection, it will appear only by means of <Merge type="all"/>tag.

Makea try out: edit /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu and comment out<Merge type="all"/> this way:  and you'll find that the menuchanged accordingly (see picture 2). Erasing the comment returns themenu to its original state.

Finally,the last element in the menu structure: the submenus.

Submenusare created by enclosing elements between the tags <Menu </Menu>.Yes, the same topmost tag. Submenus are menus afterall.

Let'stake Settings, the submenu that appears first, surrounded byseparator lines and described by the enclosing <Menuname></Menuname>tag in the

Layout section. It’s defined this way:

Thisarrangement creates the Settings submenu like shown in the nextpicture.

Asyou can see in the XML code, the submenu Settings is a complete menustructure in itself, with a Name, a Category to identify its internalelements, a Layout and even an internal submenu. Also notice that,for the first time a .directory element appears in the menustructure: xfce-settings.directory. This is the elementresponsible for not only identify an element as a submenu underanother menu, but also to name it, show an icon alongside it (to itsleft) and other interesting stuff, like translations to otherlocales. As I mentioned before, this specific file(xfce-settings.directory) resides in/usr/share/desktop-directories. Have a look in it to have anidea.

Proceeding,notice that, after being identified by <Name>Settings</Name>and get all its details from<Directory>xfce-settings.directory</Directory>, itincludes a Category, named Settings. This means that everyapplication that has "Settings" in its Categories=line somewhere in its definition file (.desktop) in/usr/share/applications will show under the Settings submenu.

Specificallyto the Settings submenu, notice that it layouts itself to have thexfce-settings-manager application(<Filename>xfce-settings-manager.desktop</Filename>)on its top and a submenu comprised of Screensavers specificapplications. If there are screensaver applications, they shallappear under a screensavers submenu that is named and featured at a.directory file in /usr/share/desktop-directories. If there’s noscreensavers aplications, then this submenu does not appear, althoughdefined.

Noticealso that, after its top item, it shows a separator (<Separator/>)and all applications categorized as Settings appear bellow itby means of the line <Merge type="all"/>.

Settingsubmenu is an excellent example of a complete menu structure. Asimpler submenu item, though, is exactly like this one:

Thissubmenu definition is the Development submenu. So, it identifies thesubmenu Development (<Name>Development</Name>) in themain menu, indicates that its definition (name, icon, nametranslations, etc) is found in the file xfce-development.directory(<Directory>xfce-development.directory</Directory>) in/usr/share/desktop-directories.

Mostof the other submenu items present in XFCE menu follow this samesimple menu structure. Some, however, need specific adjustments tomeet XFCE designers requirements. Let’s take the submenu Acessoriesas an example:

Sinceyou’re becoming a master in XFCE menu by now, I’m sure you caneasily catch the meaning of this submenu. It brings two new tagelements: <Exclude></Exclude> and <Or></Or>.

So,every application belonging to any of those four categories(Accesibility, Core, Legacy and Utility) are grouped together underthe Accessories submenu.

Conversely,every application listed between <Exclude></Exclude> isleft out of the Accessories submenu. In this particular case fourapplications (<Filename></Filename>), not class ofapplications (<Category></Category>), are excluded fromAccessories menu. The reason for the exclusion of these applicationsis that they already appear in the main menu, as you can see in Fig.1 and in the main Layout section. Surely these applications arelisted in more than one category in the Categories= line in their.desktop files. As an example, the exo-file-manager.desktop file in/usr/share/applications has the lineCategories=Utility;X-XFCE;X-Xfce-Toplevel;, meaning that thisspecific application can appear in any menu/submenu that iscategorized likewise. So, this is one way to not have the same menuitem repeated in different places in the same menu, what makes themenu cumbersome.

Asa last example, in the full XFCE menu, let’s examine Multimediasubmenu:

Inthis submenu three categories of applications, Audio, Video andAudioVideo, are being grouped together under one submenu only, calledMultimedia. Of course you could create individual submenus namedAudio, Video and AudioVideo, provided you also created theirdefinitions in files named, for instance, xfce-audio.directory,xfce-video.directory and xfce-audiovideo.directory.

Soguys, to customize original XFCE menu into the one that goes withDreamlinux, I copied XFCE menu to the /home/dreamer/.config/menusdirectory in the working Dreamlinux environment and made thecustomizations in that file. As a matter of clarification, the menufile in /home/<username>/.config/menus has precedence over theone in /etc/xdg/menus. So, the one I modified in that directory isthe one showing in Dreamlinux XFCE Desktop. If you move it out ordelete it, then the original XFCE in /etc/xdg/menus immediatelyreplaces it. I think this is the mechanism sponsored by that<DefaultMergeDirs/> inthe beginning of the menu file. Here’s my a picture of my~/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menu:

So,I essentially modified XFCE menu this way:

Noticethat I commented out () the merging of the other categories of submenus.

Alsonotice that there is a submenu Games in my customized menu. However,since I didn’ t install any game in Dreamlinux, this submenu doesnot appear. As soon as I install games, as I did few minutes ago, themenu changes to this:

SoI think everybody reading this little tutorial now
is fully capableto customize his/her own XFCE menu.

Onefinal notice though. If you decide to change
your menu, I suggest youwork your own copy
of the pristine XFCE menu in /etc/xdg/menus.

Then,besides getting rid of Dreamlinux menu
(rm -f/home/<username>/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menu), youshould also delete
system-menu daemon (rm -f /home/<username>/.config/autostart/system-menu.desktop) anderase the whole contents of/home/<username>/.local/share/applications (rm -f/home/<username>/.local/share/applications/*).
This is becauseI wrote a daemon that is activated
in every boot and that takes careof new installs/uninstalls/modifications to /usr/share/applications,doubling it in /home/<username>/.local/share/applications, butchanging their .desktop file to make them fall into only those fivecategories: Settings, Applications, Games, System, Utilities andDreamlinux.

Thisis my idea of a clean, non-repetitive menu. Anyone, however, is freeto modify it at will.

Install Firefox

Install Firefox in DL5and adding it to the dock

1- Download Firefox. I opted for the English (US)version) from

http://www.mozilla.org.en_US/firefox/all.html

2 – Go to Downloads directory andextract the firefox-9.0.1..tar.bz2 file to /opt:

cd ~/Downloads,sudo tar xjvf firefox-9.0.1.tar.bz2 -C /opt

3 - Next I wanted to make myself ownerto the moved firefox folder so I issued the command: sudo chown<username>:<username> -R /opt/firefox

NOTE: Instead of <username> typethe name that you use to logon.

4 - In order to start firefox with the"simple" command firefox it is good to make symbolic linkto the /usr/bin directory with the following command: sudo ln -s/opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox

Basically you can now run firefox.

5 - Next thing is to create a .desktopfile that you can use to have firefox available in your dock.

Openan editor (geany will do just fine) and add the following content:

6 - Next also copy this file to/usr/share/applications directory:

sudo cp~/.local/share/plank/firefox.desktop /usr/share/applications

7 - Next issue the command: xfdesktop–reload

Now firefox should be visible in yourmenu under Applications.

8 - Next open your editor (again Geanywill do just fine) and add the following content:

[PlankItemsDockItemPreferences]Launcher=/home/<username>/.local/share/plank/firefox.desktopSort=3

Save this file as:~/.config/plank/dock1/launchers/firefox.dockitem
NOTE 1:Replace <username> with your own username
NOTE 2: The 3after sort indicates the location in the dock, alter this to yourliking

9 - Log out and log back in and Firefoxshould also be visible in your dock.

Plank Dock Settings

Increasing or decreasing dock icons size

To increase or decrease the dock icons size do this (from your home):

Launch geany: click on leftmost icon on the dock (Run Program), type geany and click on Run button.
Click on the Open button or File/Open (or Ctrl + O).
Click over you user name on the left panel o=f the opening dialog (named Places), click on More options, mark Show hidden files, navigate to .config on the right panel and double click on it.
Double click on plank and then on dock1.

Click on settings and then click on the Open button (on the rightmost bottom of the panel).
Change the value of IconSize from 48 to whichever you wish (like 52 or 64, for instance).

Save the file and close geany.

To Remove an icon (application) from the plank bar right-click on it and uncheck the Keep in Dock.

To add an application to the dock, first launch the application on XFCE menu. You'll notice that its icon will show in the rightmost of the dock. Then right-click on it and check Keep in Dock.

Do a logout and login sequence.

If you want to change dock items order edit .dockitem file located in ~/.config/plank/launchers and change their sort numbers at will (field Sort=xxxxx). Increasing its sort number move it to the right, while decreasing it does the opposite.

How to create a group applications in Plank dock

Youare not limited to only throw individual applications in Plank dock.It’s also possible to group application in one menu only in Plank,resulting in a group icon that opens a pop-up menu with the groupedapplications. This is convenient if you decide, for instance, to haveall your menu of applications grouped according to your willing,without touching the system’s menu.

Let’sstart with an example. Suppose you wish to group all installedgraphics applications in one group called graphicsapps, representedby one icon only in Plank.

Do the following:

Double-click on the Home icon in your Desktop, to open the homefolder.
Click on View and then in Show Hidden Files. Alternatively you canpress Ctrl + H in your keyboard to show the hidden files in yourhome.
Double-click the .local, share and plank folders. Fig. 1 shows a viewof this operation in file manager.
Right-click on any place in the white area and select CreateFolder...Name the new folder. In our example, name it graphicsapps.Double-click the created folder to open it.
Slide your file manager to the right and double-click on the iconFile System in Desktop. Then double-click on the following folders:usr, share, applications.
Grab the applications you want to group in graphicsapps folder anddrag them to that folder. In our example I will drag:

GNUImage Manipulation Program;
Imagination;
Inkscape;
Ristretto Image Viewer;
Screenshot;
Shotwell; and
VLCMedia Player.

Theresulting is shown in the next picture.

7.Open Geany Text Editor, by clicking the icon with a sheet of paperand a pen.

8.Click on the leftmost icon, Create a new file and input the followingtext in the opening window:

[PlankItemsDockItemPreferences] Launcher=/home/<username>/.local/share/plank/graphicsappsSort=10

9. Save thefile by clicking int the Save file icon (the one with a disketteicon).

10. Input,in the entry box named Name:.config/plank/dock1/launchers/graphicsapps.dockitem.

11. Do alogout/login sequence and an icon with the selected applicationsinside will show in the dock.

Localization of Dreamlinux to any other language

Localization of Dreamlinux

Aiming to have global presence, Dreamlinux is developed and configured in International English (en_US), the common language to the vast majority of GNU/Linux distributions.

However, being a Debian derivative, Dreamlinux can easily be localized to any of the locales supported by Debian (or, almost every known language).

Localizing Dreamlinux or any other Debian derivative to any language can be obtained by installing:

locales.
The best and easier way.
Install locales and select the idiom localizations you wish.
This package contains the libc.mo’s i18n (internationalization) files, plus tools to generate locale definitions from included source code. Selecting only the idiom localizations needed saves a lot of space by avoiding generating the remaining localization code in /usr/share/locale.
localepurge.
A shell script designed to recover disk space by removing unnecessary locales and manpages. It depends on the aforementioned locales package.
After installation, localepurge works in pair with apt and, when new applications are installed, localepurge automatically gets rid of non-selected locales and manpages.

To illustrate, the procedure to localize Dreamlinux (after being installed) to Brazilian Portuguese will be outlined:

Open a terminal and type: sudo apt-get install locales. Alternatively install it via Synaptic.
Type: sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales.

To localize to Brazilian Portuguese, however maintaining English (the default) as an option, select on the dialog opened by dpkg-reconfigure:

en_US ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
pt_BR ISO-8859-1
pt_BR.UTF-8 UTF-8
pt_PT ISO-8859-1
pt_PT.UTF-8 UTF-8

Press Ok.
Select pt_BR.UTF-8 (this will be the system default locale from now on) .
Restart your computer.

That’s all folks!
After booting Dreamlinux will be localized to Brazilian Portuguese, except for those applications and scripts that were not yet localized to pt_BR (some in-house Dreamlinux appplications, for instance).
